STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WAOW) — The Portage County Sheriff's Office was awarded a $550,000 grant from community project funding to improve and upgrade security cameras throughout the county.

The funding was secured and presented by Congressman Derrick Van Orden.

"Consumes a lot of human resources, and I want to make sure the federal government  can help the county government, here to fulfill their mission, which is to serve and protect the people of Portage County," Can Orden said.

The cameras will be used to help county buildings such as libraries, the courthouse, the highway department and more.

The grant will be a huge help to the county said Mike Lukas, Portage County Sheriff.

"Throughout the county with the upgrades to the library, " Lukas said. "With security staff and with cameras. The resources are thin in regards to what the county budget is, what are budget for in the jail, in the sheriffs office for the cameras."

According to Lukas the new cameras will be digital and have more storage space.
