PLOVER, Wis. (WAOW) -- The Korean War took place from June of 1950 to July of 1953 nestled between World War Two and the Vietnam War. It is often overlooked, but today in Plover that wasn't the case as hundreds gathered to honor the men and women who sacrificed so much for us

Katrina Shankland, State Representative 71st Assembly District said, "So many people don't know about the Korean War, that's why it's often called, unfortunately, the forgotten war, and Plover has one of the few Korean War Memorials in the region and state and so it's so important to honor and remember the service and sacrifice of our Korean War Veterans."

Gordon and Carl Hansen are two brothers who served in the war alongside their late brother Bob, and finally got to receive gratitude, and are simply thankful people are now noticing their sacrifice.

Hansen said, "It's very nice, we appreciate it. You know, we never talked of this Korean War for years. I don't think our kids even know we were there until recently, and now we're getting things like this going on."

Congressman Derrick Van Orden a veteran himself says it's because of these heroes that we live, and speak the way we do.

Van Orden said, "We're having this interview in English and we live in a free society today, because of the sacrifices of our service men and women, and it's incredibly important that not just today, not just Memorial Day, not just Veterans Day, but everyday we thank our men and women who served our country and gave us our freedoms."

With a firing squad, and  presentation of wreaths and colors the over 132,000 Wisconsinites and other veterans who served in Korea are finally getting the glory they deserve.
