Van Orden Statement on Flood Conditions in Western Wisconsin
PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, W.I. – Today, Congressman Derrick Van Orden (WI-03), member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, released the following statement on the excessive rainfall and flooding in Wisconsin’s Third District:
“My office is coordinating closely with all pertinent agencies, companies, and local officials to prepare for any potential adverse effects from the flooding we are currently experiencing in the Third Congressional District. Our focus is to make sure that our railroads continue to operate in the safest manner possible, including limiting the transportation of hazardous materials if track conditions merit this. Emergency managers on the ground have reported washout conditions, so until there is a 100% confirmed track inspection conducted, we will operate under the assumption that these reports are accurate.
“BSNF Railway, Wisconsin and Southern, and CPKC have been put on notice that they must adhere to the strictest safety protocols and will be held accountable if they do not. They have all been cooperative at this point. We will not sacrifice the safety of our people for the railroads' convenience or profit, and we will not have a repeat of the derailment in Stoddard that sent several train cars floating down the Mississippi River.
“The Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA, and local emergency managers have been very responsive and are standing by to help our friends and neighbors if required. We will continue to monitor the situation and determine if next steps need to be taken.”
